The stories are classic and still very true to life. Where most folks go wrong those is that they read Shakespeare. Please DON'T read Shakespeare. He wrote plays. Watch his plays. Watch trained actors bring his stories to life.
Watch the play (if you can't find it live go to the library and borrow a DVD) and then watch a remake of it. For instance - watch Hamlet and then watch The Lion King. It is essentially the same story (the uncle kills the dad who just so happens to be King and the son tries to figure out what happened....) Then write a paper comparing the two. Then, for a bit of fun, watch Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.
Watch Romeo and Juliet and then watch West Side Story.
Watch The Taming of the Shrew (the Elizabeth Taylor version is fantastic!) and then watch Ten Things I Hate About You.
There are TONS because the stories are classics. You can find a pretty complete list here: http://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/List_of_William_ Shakespeare_screen_adaptations
Always encourage at lease one-page report comparing and contrasting the two.
