Similar to what I was able to offer at MCC, but a few miles down the road and a tad later in the afternoon.....

Here is the fall schedule. Classes do not repeat within one year as Genetics, Anatomical Survey and Env. Chemistry II are still coming later this year.

MICROSCOPIC BIOLOGY

This course consists of 12 hours (over 6 weeks) of high school

level biology microscope exercises and related

discussions. Lab work will include lessons in lab safety,

microscope work (including making and staining slides), and

microscopic life. Each student will make their own lab

notebook of algae, protists, and microscopic life forms and

learn how to use a biologic key. Students should be

currently studying High School Biology and be prepared to do

some reading in between classes. These labs follow every

major curriculum's requirement for microscopic work.

This class is perfect for those using Apologia's Biology course.

Additional Lab fee of $20 for materials will need to be paid

to instructor (for live specimens) waived if you can bring your own decent microscope!

BIG Changes!

I accepted a new job today! It is a part-time teaching job at St. Mary's Catholic School in Woodstock. I will be teaching their Jr. High math classes.

Sadly, I am having to resign from both Heritage and GIFT completely. I have really loved the many wonderful families I have met through these groups and hope that I have a chance to work with them again in the future.

My day at St. Mary's will be ending in the early afternoon and I am working to try to reschedule my local classes and all of my private students to these afternoons.

The classes I am hoping to reschedule include the Conceptual Physics class in Cary on either Mondays or Wednesdays, the Math & Science Club in Crystal Lake on Thursdays, and the High School Biology and Environmental Science classes in Crystal Lake on Fridays.

I will be contacting my private students after I have a better idea when the rescheduled afternoon classes are. That way we can, hopefully, make firm plans and not bounce people around from day to day, time to time.

I realize this is chaotic right before the school year - and I very much appreciate everyone's blessings on the new job and willingness to juggle what we all thought was a fine schedule.

-OR- Environmental Chemistry classes offered on Friday afternoons through the Crystal Lake Park District (one 6 week session in the fall and one 6 week session in the spring).

Biology lab classes offered on Friday afternoons through the Crystal Lake Park District (replacing the now defunct MCC program's offerings) with Microscopic Life in the fall, Genetics during the winter and Anatomical Survey with dissections in the Spring (each class will be 6 sessions long).

As of today, the Crystal Lake Park District has not opened registrations, nor have they announced specific dates, but I hope to hear from them soon!

High School Conceptual Physics class in Cary

Conceptual Physics is both a terrific first high school science class or one later in the sequence. This class will be based on Conceptual Physics: The High School Physics Program by Paul Hewitt (the 2002 edition is still pretty current and much more affordable!). This class will cover the topics covered in the text using discussion, problem sets and experimentation. Homework will be assigned, including lab reports. Care will be taken throughout the course to discuss related current events and new scientific theories and discoveries.
Please note the following:
We will not take up our limited class time administering and correcting quizzes and tests. I will provide them and I encourage families to administer them at home using an 'open book' format.

Experiments listed in the book will occasionally differ from those offered through thisclass as the equipment I have may differ.
Prerequisites: Students should be taking or have passed Algebra I, be able to read and understand a high school level text, be willing to commit to several hours of homework each week, and be able to work cooperatively and safely in a lab situation with other students.

Students are required to have a good scientific or graphing calculator. I recommend one that they can also use on the ACT and/or SAT ? the guidelines for which can be found on collegeboard.org

Cost for 30 weeks of 1 1/2 hr. classes is $300.

We had a great first day of Geology Camp today despite the HOT weather. We learned about glaciers, moraines, kettles, mesic woods and prairies, the different types of wetlands and more. We also were able to spot several painted turtles, herons, chipmunks and loads of wonderful blooming plants. Now if only it would cool off a bit!

For centuries, cursive handwriting has been an art. To a growing number of young people, it is a mystery.
"The majority of students cannot write in cursive, nor can they read it. At the same time, their printing skills are awful. Not only is it difficult for me to read, they themselves often cannot read back their own notes."

The sinuous letters of the cursive alphabet, swirled on countless love letters, credit card slips and banners above elementary school chalk boards are going the way of the quill and inkwell. With computer keyboards and smartphones increasingly occupying young fingers, the gradual death of the fancier ABC’s is revealing some unforeseen challenges.

Might people who write only by printing — in block letters, or perhaps with a sloppy, squiggly signature — be more at risk for forgery? Is the development of a fine motor skill thwarted by an aversion to cursive handwriting? And what happens when young people who are not familiar with cursive have to read historical documents like the Constitution?

Learn about the biomes and environmental health of the Chicago area by hiking and exploring 2 unique locations in our area as well as conducting a variety of hands-on lab projects designed to help students understand how our environment effects us and how we effect our environment.

Please plan on packing a ‘picnic’ lunch and plenty of water each day. Good hiking shoes and jeans/long pants are highly recommended each day. Plan on getting dirty! Families are welcome to join us when appropriate.

Who: students aged 10-18
When: 10-3:00 each day

Where: the primary location will be 5004 N Westwood Dr., Johnsburg, IL but we will also visit Volo Bog, State Natural Area and Glacial Park in Ringwood. Exactly where we will meet each day will depend on the weather (if it is over 90o or pouring we will obviously not be hiking that day!) so be sure to leave an email address or phone number where we can keep in touch daily during the class.

Cost: $80.00 per student

Attention Boy Scouts - Yes, this is an Eagle required merit badge. You will NOT finish this in one week because your observations should be further apart. The reports can be done during the week or afterward. We need to get blue cards filled out and signed before the first day of class.

Learn about the geologic past, present and future of the Chicago area by actually hiking 3 unique geological locations in our area and seeing the wonderful moraines, kettles, bogs and unique drainage systems (lakes and streams) of our area. We will meet at a variety of sites so that we can hike and experience a whole new terrain, as well as learn to appreciate how the local geologic features directly influence the biologic health and diversity of the area.

Please plan on packing a ‘picnic’ lunch and plenty of water each day. Good hiking shoes and jeans/long pants are highly recommended each day. Plan on getting dirty!

Families are welcome to join us when appropriate. Most of the sites have nature centers and areas for younger children to play.

Who: students aged 8-14 who can hike at least a mile

Fresh Water Ecology (Limnology) June 20 - 24th OR Aug. 1 - 5th, 2011

Join us as we learn about the geological, biological, chemical and physical features we take for granted here in the ‘lakes’ region of Illinois. Weather permitting we will meet to make field collections at several locations in the lakes region and bring some of these collections back to Mrs. Wentz’s home to analyze the variety of microscopic life and the chemical composition of the water and compare and contrast our findings from location to location. A list of recommended resources will be provided the first day of class.
Please plan on packing a ‘picnic’ lunch and water each day. Good hiking shoes and jeans/long pants are highly recommended each day. Plan on getting dirty!

Families are welcome to join us when appropriate. Most of the sites we will be visiting have areas for children to play. Bowling and playgrounds are a short drive away from the Wentz’s home.

Who: students aged 10 - 16

When: from 10 - 3:00 each day

Where: Locations include Volo Bog (Ingleside), McHenry Dam (McHenry), Nippersink Creek (Ringwood), Lake Defiance (inside Moraine Hills State Park (McHenry) and Three Oaks Recreation Area (ie: Vulcan Lakes in Crystal Lake). Drosophila (Fruit Fly) Genetics –
June 27, 28, 29th (and the following are flexible* lab dates: July 7, 8, 18, 19, 27, 28), 2011

We will spend the first few classes covering the basics of genetics and then, using that information, breed fruit flies with a variety of genetic differences. We will breed them through two generations. Each generation takes approximately 9-12 days to hatch as adults, hence the 'crazy' scheduling of the class sessions. This is a terrific opportunity for students who are ready for and enjoy detailed hands-on work.

Who: Students aged 14 - 18 (or with permission of the instructor)

When: The first three classes, June 27, 28, 29 will be 10 - 3:00 each day

All times and dates after that are flexible. *They are flexible because on some days two visits may be desired in order to secure only newly hatched adult females to breed. Female Drosophila can store sperm from their first mating throughout the lives, if you want to know who the father is you have to separate her within the first 8 hours of hatching (or you can contact Mrs. Wentz in advance and have her clear the vial of all adults and you can count and breed during one afteronoon visit).

Cost: $120 per student (includes lab fees)

McHenry County College has, for now, decided to put the Homechool Friday program on hold.

The school has experienced huge growth in both the number of students and the number of credit classes it needs to offer to keep up with this growth. The coordinator of the classes is moving departments in the near future, the support staff situation is complicated, and they barely have a free classroom anywhere.

I do hope that they choose to offer these wonderful 'transition to college' classes again in the near future. In the meantime, I understand that both Rockford and College of Lake County offer classes for homeschoolers looking for that 'on campus' experience and I will continue to offer similar classes throughout the area. I hope you find what you are looking for!

For those of us who love proper children's adventure stories, Brain Jacques' Redwall series has been wonderful. Mr. Jacques came to the U.S. several times on book signing tours to meet his adoring fans fom across the pond, and I even have a wonderful photo of my son with his arm draped around his shoulder. My library's Young Adult Advisory Board even once held a Redwall Picnic based on his recipes!

People of all ages are invited to help set a Guinness World Record in Simultaneous Reading on Friday, February 11, 2011 as part of the national kickoff of the Civil War Sesquicentennial. The 150th anniversary observance of the Civil War will begin that day, exactly 150 years after Abraham Lincoln left Springfield, Illinois on his Inaugural journey to Washington D.C. as President-elect. Lincoln made an impromptu speech that day from the Great Western Depot before departing Springfield for the last time.

The speech, known as Lincoln's Farewell Address, will be re-enacted at that same depot at 11:00 a.m. Central Standard Time on February 11, 2011. Thousands of people all over the world will join the re-anactor in simultaneously reading that speech. The current record of 223,363 people simultaneously reading something was set in December 2006 and is expected to be broken with this reading. All who would like to take part in the reading are invited to go to one of the registered places listed below or you can organize your own site according to the guidelines on this website: http://extras.sj-r.com/lincolndepot/ The website also has more detailed info along with the Farewell Address. Be Alert, but Please Remain Calm

A bill was introduced in the Illinois Senate asking for a manatory registration of all private school students. If this were actually passed into law, this would mean that a student attending a local brick and mortar Catholic or Jewish or Christian or Montessori or Waldorf or Sudbury..... school, as well as a homeschooled student, who did not submit the form would be found to not be in compliance (possibly even truant, although no punishment is mentioned that I have seen). No private school is going to want this.

In addition - consider:
How is IL going to pay for staff to file and organze the millions of pieces of paper this would generate?
How is IL going to pay for people to follow through on pieces of paper not sent?

I am very opposed to this. Yet, I am asking for calm and that folks NOT contact their state Congressional Reps yet - contrary to much of the list chatter going on. Right now this proposal hasn't even been handed over to the Education Committee. It is way too soon folks.

There are a lot of steps in between something being proposed and something actually being voted on by all the Reps. The vast majority of these proposals are never even seen by our Reps because they are withdrawn or don't make it out of committee. Many of those still don't make it to a vote on the floor because the sponsor doesn't have the votes.

We need to work to NOT be overly reactionary. It makes us seem like a bunch of ill-informed people. If we are smart enough to homeschool we certainly are smart enough to undersand the Illinois Constitution and how our government works.

On the other hand, it is WONDERFUL knowing that if this ever did make it to a third reading in committee we could raise an alarm and get such quick action!

After beginning this concept with several classes and realizing that the old VHS version of this I have is impossible to show to one of my classes because the facility doesn't have a VHS player (not that I can blame them for not having antiques around!), I went on a hunt and finally found it!

A few days ago I accepted a job teaching Chemistry for Heritage Homeschool Workshops in Elgin on Monday mornings! This means that my volunteer hours at the Johnsburg Library's Homeschool Resource Center are being changed. I am now going to be there on Wednesday nights from 7-9 p.m..

I am hoping that after almost ten years of offering a limited but free consultation services on weekday mornings that this will, at the very least, allow more dads to come in (or folks to find a babysitter so they can visit without the, um, help, of their curious twin 2 year olds!).

For a student to officially enter he/she must be registered with the Kids' Science Challenge and his/her submission must be uploaded, faxed or postmarked between October 1, 2010 and February 28, 2011. A good deal on a great Constitution resource!

I very rarely do this, so I hope I am forgiven. This is an offer for a good deal (from a very nice man) on an excellent movie about the Constitution. Many of the speeches in the movie were actually taken pretty much word for word from the minutes taken by James Madison during the Constitutional Convention. It is an amazing find and a great way of introducing first-person accounts to your visual students.

Plus - here it is for a pretty good deal. Seeing as the copy that is in the Johnsburg Library's Homeschool Resource Center is out most of the time I thought I would pass on this deal.

High School Chemistry
Based on Apologia's Exploring Creation with Chemistry, 2nd edition, this class will cover the topics covered in the text using discussion, problem sets and experimentation. Algebra 1 is a required prerequisite as Algebra is used throughout this course and we will spend a fair amount of time covering and explaining the problems. Homework will be assigned but we will not take up class time administering and correcting tests. If a family wants those given I encourage you to administer them at home. Please note: Some of the experiments listed in the book will differ from those offered through this class. Also, students need to provide their own safety glasses/goggles as I can not properly sterilize them weekly between students. Care will be taken throughout to discuss current scientific theories and methods from a Christian perspective.

Prerequisites: Students must have had Algebra I or be concurrently taking Algebra, be able to understand a high school level text, be willing to commit to several hours of homework each week, and be able to work cooperatively and safely in a lab situation with other students.

Classes will be on Wednesday afternoons from 10:30-12:00 beginning Sept. 15th, 2010.

Cost: The cost of the entire year (30 class dates) will be $375 plus $25 for lab supplies. The cost will be payable in three installments. If you need to make special payment arrangements (such as paying by credit card or making smaller, but more frequent payments) please contact Kathy Wentz directly.

Certificate: Students who successfully compete the entire year will receive a certificate indicating that they have earned one high school credit in a laboratory science at this McHenry County High School program. Grades will be given for those families who want grades. Grades will not be given for families who do not want a grade.

Kathy Wentz will introduce her visual and hands-on teaching system for learning beginning algebraic concepts using building blocks and dice and follow these concepts through Algebra I concepts. We will cover Pre-Algebra, graphing linear equations and parabolas, multiplying polynomials and factoring polynomials and algebraic fractions. Students need to be comfortable with both multiplication and division. Homework will be assigned.

Classes will be on Wednesdays from 1:00-2:20 beginning Sept. 15th, 2010.

The Cure for the Math Curse: Intro to Algebra

(for grades 4 and up)

This series of classes will introduce a fun way (using LEGOs and dice) to learn beginning algebraic concepts from 2x = 8 and ending with -4(5 - x) = 3x - 12. Students need a foundation in both multiplication and division, but do not need to have memorized all their math facts.

There are two additional levels: "Polynomials" and "Factors and More". These three levels combined comprise the majority of Algebra 1.

Math & Science Club (for ages 6-11):

Each week we will explore a math or science topic with a hands-on game or activity deigned to help students explore a wide variety of topics in a fun way while improving vocabulary and memorization skills. Math topics will include addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, percents, charts and graphs, and geometry. Science topics will include a wide variety of physical science topics including the properties of matter, Newtonian mechanics, electricity and magnetism, the physics of fluids and air, the periodic table, chromatography, and more. There will be weekly hand outs offering suggestions of activities, books to read, documentaries to watch, or games to play at home provided.

The Cure for the Math Curse: Intro to Algebra (for ages 11 and up):

This series of classes introduces a visual and hands-on system for learning beginning algebraic concepts using building blocks and dice and follows these concepts through Algebra I concepts. We will cover pre-algebra, linear equations including both positive and negative integers and variables, continue on through graphing linear equations, graphing parabolas and multiplying polynomials. Homework is both assigned and is required and should be expected to take 15 minutes a day.

Prerequisite: Students need to be comfortable with both multiplication and division, but do not need to have memorized all their math facts. If they are not comfortable with both multiplication and division a calculator will be required.

Biology (for ages 12 and up):

We will explore the beauty and complexities of life through a variety of laboratory and hands-on activities as well as related discussions stressing vocabulary and comprehension of higher concepts. Four units will be covered: microscopic life, genetics, organ systems, and the diversity of life. Students who have access to a microscope with at least 100X are encouraged to bring their microscopes in throughout the fall months. Homework (in the form of vocabulary words and questions to research and discuss) will be assigned.

Please Note: Dissections will be included only if all the students agree that they want to do them. If dissections are to be included there will be an additional supplies fee.

Physical Sciences (for ages 12 and up):

Physics and Chemistry are the foundation of all other sciences and are vital to understanding all others. Learn about the biomes and environmental health of the Chicago area by hiking 2 unique locations in our area as well as conducting a variety of hands-on lab projects designed to help students understand how our environment effects us and how we effect our environment.

Please plan on packing a ‘picnic’ lunch and plenty of water each day. Good hiking shoes and jeans/long pants are highly recommended each day. Plan on getting dirty! Families are welcome to join us when appropriate.

Who: students aged 10-16

When: 10-3:00 June 14 - 18th

Where: the primary location will be 5004 N Westwood Dr., Johnsburg, IL but we will also visit at Volo Bog, State Natural Area and Glacial Park in Ringwood.

Cost: $80.00 per student

Boy Scouts - Yes, this is an Eagle required merit badge. You will NOT finish this in one week because your observations should be further apart. The reports can be done during the week or afterward. We need to get blue cards filled out and signed before the first day of class.

　

June 21 - 25th - Field Geology

Learn about the geologic past, present and future of the Chicago area by actually hiking 3 unique geological locations in our area and seeing the wonderful moraines, kettles, bogs and unique drainage systems (lakes and streams) of our area. We will meet at a variety of sites so that we can hike and experience a whole new terrain, as well as learn to appreciate how the local geologic features directly influence the biologic health and diversity of the area. A list of recommended resources will be provided the first day of class.

Please plan on packing a ‘picnic’ lunch and plenty of water each day. Good hiking shoes and jeans/long pants are highly recommended each day. Plan on getting dirty!

Families are welcome to join us when appropriate. Most of the sites have nature centers and areas for younger children to play.

Join us as we learn about the geological, biological, chemical and physical features we take for granted here in the ‘lakes’ region of Illinois. Weather permitting we will meet to make field collections at several locations in the lakes region and bring some of these collections back to Mrs. Wentz’s home to analyze the variety of microscopic life and the chemical composition of the water and compare and contrast our findings from location to location. A list of recommended resources will be provided the first day of class.

Please plan on packing a ‘picnic’ lunch and water each day. Good hiking shoes and jeans/long pants are highly recommended each day. Plan on getting dirty!

Families are welcome to join us when appropriate. Most of the sites we will be visiting have areas for children to play. Bowling and playgrounds are a short drive away from the Wentz’s home.

(designed to meet the needs of junior high and high school students)

When: Wednesdays 10:30-noon from April 21st - May 19th

Where: a private home in Cary (please contact me for the address.... due to privacy concerns I don't want to publish it here for obvious reasons!)

We tend to worry a lot about what our student's ACT or SAT scores will be, but the only score that will matter in their lives after they are 21 is their FICO score. Let's make sure they have the knowledge they need to not ruin it early on! Using a variety of materials and activities, learn the basics necessary to understand the ins and outs of:

opening bank accounts (savings, checking, what is a NOW account? ROTH vs a traditional IRAs, etc),

borrowing money (including credit cards and mortgages),

insurance (the different types of insurance, home, car, whole life vs term life, how to pick the right plan),

utility bills and household expenses (how much is your family paying? budget plans and more),

and taxes (do I really need to file? Who pays quarterly? Who gets money back?).

Students will need a calculator in class and will be assigned homework that will include using some of the amortization calculators on bankrate.com.

Cost: The cost of this 5 week class will be $50 and is payable to Kathy Wentz the first day of class.

The Cure for the Algebra Curse: Pre-Algebra

This series of classes is designed to help your student understand many of the basic concepts needed for Algebra and provide you with a wide variety of games that will reinforce the topics without boring work book pages. Topics to be covered include positive and negative integers, fractions, order of operations, graphing, and single variables.

Where: The Johnsburg Public Library, 3000 N Johnsburg Rd., Johnsburg

When: Tuesdays 1:00 - 2:30 April 6 - May 18th

Cost: $45.00 total

Parents are strongly encouraged to attend for free.

Time to renew that Nature Journal!

For those of you who keep a nature journal and... well.... kind of dropped it when it got COLD....

it is time to pick it up again! This is also the perfect time of the year - the beginning of the year - to start one!

The squirrels, for those of you that were watching, are done with their annual courtship chasing and chittering and have gone back to sleep for a week or two. Baby hawks are about to hatch and soon the skies will again fill with circling mom and dad hawks looking for a tasty meal for their hungry babies. Buds on trees are beginning to swell (measuring the buds on the same 'adopted' tree each week is a great exercise!). Which birds wil visit your bird feeder this month and which will visit next month are different!

For those new to journaling in winter, I highly recommend the book "Guide to Nature in Winter" by Stokes. http://tinyurl.com/yj2o6zv Stokes will help you learn to identify trees by their bark and bud patterns, identify animal tracks, learn about the many different kinds of snow, and much, much more. He also does a great job of showing what a great journal can look like, with loads of sketches and captions and observations doodled here and there among the text.

Johnsburg Public Library's April Food for Fines Program

I have had several requests for info about the annual 'Food for Fines" at the Johnsburg Public Library (and, of course, their Homeschool Resource Center!). I can't imagine why - as homeschoolers would NEVER bring an item back late or lose a book........ but here is the information:

JPL's Food For Fines program is celebrated on National Library Week each year. This year that is April 11-17th.

Donate one non-perishable food item for each separate fine (as in each item). (Food cannot be used to pay for lost or damaged items, or for collection agency fees.)

More Answers: Let's face it - the reality is that the library just wants their stuff back. If you bring it back NOW you CAN pay the fine with food later. If you have already been taken to collection - return the item NOW and during food for fines you can pay the $10 agency collection fee and bring in a can of food to pay off the rest. Obviously, the best thing is to avoid the collection agency in the first place because once you are sent to them you can't get away from that $10 fee

Lastly, the donated food will all be given to the F.I.S.H. Food Pantry which assists McHenry area families in need. Yes, extra donations are always very cheerfully accepted.

Charts and Graphs Math Class in Cary

This series of four classes will concentrate on getting a better working knowledge and conceptual understanding of how to structure and organize data. Learning how to read charts and graphs is a vital tool to understand consumer economics, statistics and almost every science - and is used extensively on the science portion of the ACT and on the SAT. We will use quality math literature and a wide variety of games and activities to encourage your child to play their way to a love of math.

Cost: $40 Final day for registration is March 1st, 2010.

CLPD The Cure for the Algebra Curse: Intro to Algebra

This series of classes will introduce a fun way (using LEGOs and dice) to learn beginning algebraic concepts from 2x = 8 and ending with -4(5 - x) = 3x - 12. Students need a foundation in both multiplication and division, but do not need to have memorized all their math facts.

These classes began in January. While I don't recomend students new to Algebra's principles join the class once started, students who are somewhat familiar with Algebra or who have taken my Algebra class before and want a refresher ate certainly welcome to join us in the middle.

CLPD Science Club: Chemistry!

Science Club: Work and Simple Machines

The complicated mechanical devices we use daily have their origins in the simple machines whose principals we will explore together. A simple machine has no energy of its own and cannot do work by itself. Hammers, screws, and knives are classic examples of simple machines we use every day. But how exactly do they work most efficiently? These classes will combine Joy Hakim's text “The Story of Science: Aristotle Leads the Way” with an additional study of the ancient study of work and simple machines. Students should be prepared to use measuring and graphing skills to perform experiments and see for themselves how clever the designs of these simple machines actually are.

These classes will be held at the Crystal Lake Park District's Rotary Building on Thursdays from 1-2:30.

Science Club in Crystal Lake

Do to a significant 'wait list' for a full Science Club class in Cary and with the speedy cooperation of both the Fun School Co-op and the Crystal Lake Park District, there is now a second chance to join us!

We will spend this 4 week session covering Unit 1 of a multidisciplinary spine which includes activities and topics in science, history, math, and language arts: Joy Hakim's The Story of Science: Aristotle Leads the Way. This text covers scientific discoveries, knowledge, and processes from the beginning of the Universe to the mid 1500s and offers our group the chance to blend science with the rest of their history based curriculum.

Each family can decide how much they want to use, or not use, the chosen text. There are 30 chapters in the text and each week we will cover one or two chapters so that those families who wish to join us for the year can complete the entire text by the end of May. Students do not need to read the text in order to participate, but the class projects and discussions will be based on the chapter. It is recommended that each family purchase a copy.

Classes will be Thursdays from 1 - 2:30 on Oct.1, 8th, 15th and 29th. There will be NO CLASS on Oct. 22nd.

Cost: This 4 week session will cost $55 for residents of Crystal Lake Park District and $70 for non-residents.

(Note: all other sessions will be 6 weeks long)

Science and Math Mondays

Are you interested in joining a small group of other teens on Mondays for semi-private tutoring, small group projects and field trips designed to meet your math and science needs? All activities and instruction will be planned according to individual student needs

The students this is aimed at have already taken most of my science lab classes through the Homeschool Fridays program at McHenry County College or through other, similar, programs and have basic science lab techniques down. This program is a way for them to have time to hone their techniques and skills before college even though they already have the basics down.

Days will usually be from 10:00 to 4:00. On days when the weather is good we will take a few hours and head out to do field work at Volo Bog, Glacial Park, Moraine Hills State Park or any one of the other amazing natural areas in the Chain O'Lakes area. On days when the weather is poor we will stay in and work on individual or small group projects, vocabulary, and math skills (Algebra with fractions and Geometry are currently planned).

We will also have a field trip approximately once a month and it can be assumed that the hours of those days will be longer than on other Mondays. As each trip is planned an announcement of the dates and times will be made and individual students can then decide if that trip is something they want to participate in. Student input into the field trips will be highly encouraged.

Students are asked to commit to an entire season (fall, winter, spring). Students that complete three full seasons (one year) will be given a certificate indicating 1 full credit of high school science and 1 full credit of high school math completed in McHenry County, IL. The exact course names of the credits will be determined by the student because the exact topic and level of study is determined by the student.

Homework will be assigned. Homework will vary from student to student and will be based on their projects and goals.

Cost: $30 a week plus any additional costs for supplies or field trip expenses Supplies will vary from student to student and might include anything from bacteria cultures to advanced dissection specimens and can be split whenever two or more students want to do a group project. Field trip expenses might include train fare downtown or museum admission where I am unable to gain us free entry. (Note: I am very frugal and do promise to keep all additional expenses as low as I can! As many of you know, I already own a lot of science equipment!) All additional project costs will be cleared with the parent first!

High School Biology in Cary

This High School level Biology course will focus on discussion and related laboratory exercises during our class time. The class will cover cellular forms and functions including cellular reproduction and genetics, the diversity of life including protists, fungi, plants and animals, plant and animal anatomy, human anatomy and physiology, and ecological systems and how they affect life - including population dynamics. Care will be taken throughout to discuss current biological theories and methods from a Christian perspective.

Required Textbook: The spine/text we will use is Biology:Concepts and Connections by Campbell and Reece, 5th edition. (The 6th edition did not significantly update the text, only the available online materials.) As every textbook is at least 10 years behind current science Mrs. Wentz will encourage the reading of certain science magazines articles and other additional materials as needed to supplement.

Equipment: Students are encouraged to provide their own microscope if possible. Mrs. Wentz owns several, but it is far preferable to have only two students on a microscope and we will be doing extensive microscope work. Mrs. Wentz recommends a scope with at least 600X DIN objectives and electrical illumination. (We will not be doing a lot of bacteriological studies so do not need 1000X/oil immersion lenses at this time, however, these can be added later on most quality microscopes.)

Prerequisites: Students must have had both and understood both basic Physics and Chemistry already (as either a junior high or high school student), must be able to read and understand a high school level text, must be willing to commit to several hours of homework each week, and must be able to work cooperatively and safely in a lab situation with other students.

Cost: The cost of the entire year (30 class dates) will be $375 plus the cost of dissection specimens in the spring. (Mrs. Wentz is very frugal, she works hard to keep expenses down, but decent specimens simply cost more). This averages out to be $12.50 a week. The cost will be payable in three installments â€“ the first at registration, the second on Nov. 11th, and the third on February 10th, 2010. Certificate: Students who successfully complete the entire year will receive a certificate indicating that they have earned one high school credit in a laboratory science at this McHenry County High School program.
